Critical Care Nursing – A Challenge Not Everyone Can Take On
Academic education is not enough for critical care nurses to carry on in their profession. A talent for quickly analyzing, anticipating problems and constantly reassessing situations, is crucial, as well as a desire to always be the best. If the nurse does not possess all of these abilities along with her nursing skill and experience then a patient may die.
Can nursing be done by anybody?
Nurses must love interacting with their patients and have a great respect and appreciation for the doctors they assist. Many responsibilities rest on the shoulders of critical care nurses. They are always expected to use their critical thinking ability to handle any sort of situation, as well as record and report every detail regarding a patient’s condition and progress. And they must always be kind and considerate when dealing with the patient and their family or friends.
Never-ending training:
A nurse’s training is never finished. They must carry on learning and expanding their knowledge as well as acquiring new skills. Nurses, like their doctor colleagues, must have a thorough knowledge of their work and always be alert to any changes and new findings in their field of choice. The doctor and other staff members depend on the nurse’s knowledge and experience as much as their patients do. The nurse is like the Mother Teresa of the medical field who holds things together.
Passion for the profession:
Success in nursing requires dedication to medicine and its object of study – the human body, as well as to the patients and their well-being. Of course the study of anatomy is part of the nurse’s education and if this is not a really fascinating study for the nurse perhaps nursing is the wrong vocation for them. Passion for the people, for the job and the human body is what makes a nurse a very good professional.
Other abilities to help on the job
As far as difficult and important jobs go, nursing is probably one of the most prominent. A nurse can be proficient and successful in dealing with every problem meticulously, but only if she has a healthy dose of confidence in her skills and herself.
Life and death situations make the trade of nurses, especially those specialized in critical care. Some nurses benefit from these situations and are able to learn the true value of life, becoming thus more self-confident and stronger. Others will find themselves overwhelmed and possibly run for the hills. Maintaining a positive attitude will not only make the nurse a better person and a better nurse but it will translate to the patient, their family and friends and co-workers as a calming and reassuring influence. A sound belief in her skills and intellect will provide the nurse with a healthy dose of pride in her work, not to mention herself.
Our thanks and gratitude to all nurses for the lovely care and all the little miracles they give us.
